That's why it is so important when buying footwear that you go to a shop where you will be seen by experienced and trained staff and that stocks an extensive range of sizes and also different width fittings.

Women's shoes width fittings range from the narrowest AA to the widest EEEE (see below). Men's from narrowest E to the widest H (see below).
